Spain is a country rich in history. In 1793 Spain went to war with France. By 1795 Spain became a client state of France. But soon distress swept over the country and Spain began the Peninsular War. By 1814 France was forced out of Spain. By April 1898 Spain was again at war over the state of Cuba, with the USA. By August the war over and the parties signed the Treaty of Paris. It gave the US control of Cuba as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. But peace would not come to Spain until 1955. In 1982 Spain joined NATO. Spain also has a rich cultural scene. Miguel De Cervantes may be one of Spain’s most famous writers. Don Quixote is part of the Spanish Canon. Spanish art influences places all over Europe. Some famous Spanish painters include Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, and of course Picasso and Salvador Dali.
Spain is also famous for its Architecture. During Roman rule in Spain the Roman Theater in Merida was built. Also a Roman wonder is the Roman Bridge of Alcantara. There are also gorgeous Gothic style buildings. The Burgos Cathedral was built in 1221 and modified in the 15th and 16th centuries. During the Renaissance the Palace of Charles was built. If you want to see contemporary architecture, the Guggeheim Museum Bilbao is an art museum in Spain. Also the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciencies was designed by Santiago Calatrava. It is made of 5 different areas called a city. Also while you are there you must sample the Spanish Cuisine. You can taste the Mediterranean flavors and influence in every bite. While dishes can vary between regions in Spain there are a few items that are universal. Paella (saffron rice), migas, jamon Serrano (cured Ham) and cheeses are eaten throughout Spain. Popular cites to visit in Spain include Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, and Sevilla. If you want to see history you should see Cordoba, Santiago De Compostela, and Tarragona. If you prefer to go to the beach you can visit Valencia, Blanca, Brava and Da Morte.
